n8n vs Zapier vs Make: Which One Should Your Business Use?

Compare n8n, Zapier, and Make on flexibility, pricing models, maintenance, AI workflows, and the type of business each platform suits.

The short answer: each platform has a different strength

Zapier is often the fastest choice for a simple connection between popular cloud apps. Make offers a visual scenario builder that is useful for moderately complex data flows. n8n is usually stronger when a workflow needs custom logic, several branches, API calls, structured data processing, AI steps, or control over hosting.

Neither platform is automatically better. The right choice depends on process complexity, internal technical capacity, security requirements, and how important long-term flexibility is.

When Make is a good fit

Make sits between basic app automation and developer-oriented orchestration. Its visual mapping is useful when a team needs to transform data across several services without writing a custom application.

  • The workflow needs more visual branching and data mapping than a basic Zap
  • Managed hosting is preferred over self-hosting
  • The team is comfortable maintaining visual scenarios
  • The required apps and operations are supported by existing modules

When Zapier is a good fit

Zapier works well for teams that want straightforward triggers and actions with minimal setup.

  • The apps already have mature Zapier integrations
  • The workflow has few steps and limited branching
  • A non-technical operator will own future changes
  • Managed hosting is more valuable than deep customization

When n8n is a good fit

n8n is well suited to workflows that behave more like custom software than a simple app-to-app connector.

  • You need webhooks, custom APIs, code steps, loops, or complex conditions
  • The system includes AI agents, retrieval, tools, or structured model outputs
  • You want self-hosting or more control over execution and data
  • The workflow will grow into a broader operational system

Compare the complete operating cost

Subscription price is only one part of the decision. Include build time, execution volume, hosting, monitoring, maintenance, incident response, and the cost of platform limitations.

For a critical process, document credentials, owners, failure alerts, data retention, and recovery steps regardless of which platform you choose. A well-operated simple workflow is more valuable than a sophisticated workflow nobody can maintain.
